Go Grass Fed with Michigan’s HIDAY FARMS!

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Just had a wonderful conversation with Michigan’s own Mr. Dan Hiday of the 155 acre Hiday Farms in Burlington, Michigan. They are the REAL deal in local Michigan pasture raised animals – including Turkey! Now most of you know I am a big promoter of eating wild (assuming its not an overly fished species), or appropriately farmed fish over land animal meat (e.g., poultry, beef, pork etc). But that is, at least to a significant degree, because of the method of raising and feeding the majority of land animals that are available in the US…which is where they’re stuck in a feed-lot and being fed tons of low nutrient to calorie ratio dry grains (and God knows what else!) with a few hormone shots and a bunch of anti-biotics to boot. The upshot is that most modern land animals are raised in a totally unnatural manner that results in A LOT LESS omega-3 fat and a WHOLE BUNCH more total UNHEALTHY fat (by the way…all that “wonderful marble” in the meat…that basically reflects a disease process called insulin resistance and diabetes!….not so tasty now, huh?) and calories.

So IF you’re going to insist on eating red meat at home, and you are interested in helping a real Michigan organization, here’s a website where Mr Hiday’s contact info is: http://www.localharvest.org/farms/M19303. Note that Hiday Farms and Mr Hiday himself will be at Detroit’s awesome EASTERN MARKET, for those of you who live here, on Dec 12th and 19th starting as early as 7am….I hear he’s got just a couple beautiful grass fed turkeys left for Christmas dinner too….IF YOU CAN BEAT ME TO ‘EM!

Time to hit the gym! ;)
