Dr Tom is both board certified by, and a member of the Board of Directors for, the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists as well as board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He presently proudly serves as Medical Director of the interdisciplinary St Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital Metabolic Nutrition and Weight Management Center in Pontiac, Michigan. He is a locally recognized expert in the management of insulin resistance, obesity and dyslipidemia and has recently completed a comprehensive online CME course in Lifestyle Medicine on the management of Metabolic Syndrome for Harvard Medical School, which should be available in 2010. He is also one of only 55 invited national obesity experts asked to author questions for the upcoming revision to National Certification Exam in Obesity Medicine.
From January through November of 2008 Dr Tom served as the Associate Medical Director for the world renown, multidisciplinary, intensive lifestyle change program at The Pritikin Longevity Center, then located in Aventura (now in Miami), Florida helping revamp their nutrition, lab testing, supplement and educational programs – particularly as it applies to obesity, diabetes, lipids and lab results assessments. Dr Tom was consistently assessed as one of the most dynamic, compelling and enjoyable lecturers and physicians while practicing at the Pritikin Longevity Center. He continues a relationship with the Pritikin organization as Pritikin’s Chief Medical Advisor and as such both advises and performs in professional public relations roles for the center, most recently on nationally syndicated FOX TV
While Dr Tom’s “heart and soul” continues to be in the areas of clinical metabolic nutrition, diabetology/lipidology and both medical weight management and surgical-support of weight loss surgeries Dr Tom additionally serves as a consultant to public schools and the restaurant and food industry in the development of enjoyable foods consistent with cardiometabolic health. In Metro Detroit Dr Tom has designed a comprehensive metabolic menu available at 12 gourmet restaurants area-wide (www.andiamoitalia.com) and is working intensively with the 15,000 student Warren Consolidated Schools system to launch an ultra-healthy lunch program in 2010.
After graduating with “Highest Honor” from Michigan State University with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology & Pre-Med in 1992, he then received his M.D. in 1999 from Wayne State University School of Medicine – one of the first medical schools in the US with a medical nutrition education component. During his senior Internal Medicine residency year in 2003 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan he served as the chief resident of its Nutrition, Preventive Medicine and Weight Control Center – one of the United State’s 1st state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary weight management programs.
Since graduating from William Beaumont Hospital (one of the top ranked heart care hospitals in the country) Internal Medicine residency program in 2003 Dr Tom has been appointed as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine. He has been invited on multiple occasions to teach Wayne State medical students on nutrition interventions for Metabolic Syndrome as well as provide students real-world clinical experience at his practice. Dr Tom has also been the invited speaker to several of William Beaumont Hospital’s CME and Noon Conferences on the Managements of Metabolic Syndrome, Dyslipidemia and Obesity on multiple occasions since his graduation. He has served as one of only a few invited expert medical advisors to the Michigan Department of Community Health Michigan Cardiovascular Alliance Task Forces on Cardiovascular Health, Adult Obesity as well as Michigan’s Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan initiative– which were launched under the auspices of the office of the Governor of Michigan.
